Maria Rye purchased this small cottage adjacent to the Western home to house "Returning Girls" young domestics who's placements didn't work out. She didn't want them mixing with the new girls and filling their heads with ideas. Girls were brought back if they were found unsuitable for their situations, unable to carry out their duties , or if they were mistreated.

Maria Rye converted this little structure, the jails guardhouse into a school where girls "got lessons in the mornings and learned sewing and needlework in the afternoons"
